Awning blinds for vertical windows - why do we use?

Most of us look forward to those hot, sunny days but the sun, while so pleasant on a beach, can also be a real nuisance in the home or workplace. Solar radiation flooding a room leads to a marked increase in temperature not only in the attic, but throughout the building. External awning blinds can provide stronger solar-heat protection than internal blinds under the tested conditions. Use of which is particularly valuable over south or west-facing roofs.

External vertical awning blinds can significantly reduce solar heat gain compared with specified internal blinds. They block UV radiation outside the pane, preventing warm air from entering the room.

EFFECTIVE PROTECTION AGAINST THE HEAT

Awning blinds constitute the optimal solution as a means of protection against excessive solar heat. The awning blind absorbs solar radiation before it reaches the glazing and emits the heat to the outside of the room, hence it ensures much better protection from tiresome heat on the sunny days. In the referenced test configuration, the awning blind reduced indoor temperature by up to 10°C and provided up to 8× the specified protection metric versus the stated internal blind.

ENERGY-EFFICIENCY

Awning blinds may reduce cooling demand and associated operating emissions in defined building and climate scenarios.

INFLOW OF NATURAL LIGHT

Windows with awning blinds rather than external roller shutters allow a free flow of light to the interior. Selected fabrics can preserve useful daylight and may reduce the need for artificial lighting under suitable conditions.

VISIBILITY TO THE OUTSIDE AND PRIVACY

When pulled down, the awning blind ensures visual contact with the external environment. You can easily view the surroundings and yet have privacy from any observers who might be tempted to take a peek inside.

IMPROVED ERGONOMICS

The unrolled awning blind improves the working environment by maintaining an even level of light and ensuring visual comfort. It protects against the type of intense light reflection which causes problems to those working on laptops or watching TV. The awning blind can help reduce glare and support visual comfort under the stated daylight and screen-use conditions.

PROTECTION AGAINST HARMFUL UV RADIATION

Awning blinds help reduce the amount of UV radiation entering the room. As a result, they may contribute to reducing the fading and yellowing of interior furnishings caused by long-term exposure to sunlight.

PROTECTION AGAINST INSECTS

In addition to providing protection against heat gain, the electric awning blinds (Z-Wave, Solar WiFi) and VMZ ZIP version can act as an insect barrier when fully closed and correctly installed.

QUICK AND EASY INSTALLATION

By using an additional VMX installation set, awning blinds can be installed by one person and can reduce installation time compared with the specified external-installation method under the stated conditions. When purchasing the VMX set, the customer can carry out DIY installation of manual awnings in the full size range, while electric, solar and VMZ ZIP types up to the size of about 1.5 m x 1.5 m.

Protection against room overheating

Awning blinds are mounted outside windows, which is why they effectively protect the room from overheating. Research conducted by FAKRO shows that they are up to 8 times more effective than commonly used internal blinds, which usually cover harsh sunlight. Awning blinds absorb sunlight before reaching the glass and emit heat outside, thus protecting the interior from overheating, which in practice causes the internal temperature to drop by up to 10°C.

In accordance with DIN 5034-1 standard, rooms should be protected from excessive heat of the sun not by means of internal accessories, but rather external shields (awning blinds, roller shutters).

Komfortowa obsługa

Window without screens
Solar radiation penetrates the room through the glass. When it comes into contact with the surface of objects inside, the radiation turns into heat. Windows with low-emission coatings trap it inside the room, causing the interior to heat up significantly.

Window with internal blind
Sun rays penetrate the room through the glass and are absorbed by the internal blind. They are converted into heat, which is not transmitted outside through the low-emission glass. Instead of protecting against heat, the blind heats up and emits heat into the interior. This leads to undesirable heating of the rooms on hot days.

Window with external awning blind
A window covered with an awning blind prevents sunlight from entering the room. Most of the solar radiation does not even reach the glazing. It is absorbed before the glass, and the heat is emitted outside, not inside. In this way, the awning  blind protects the room from overheating on hot, sunny days.
